Chapter Six

Jeremiah

I stand at the door for a few minutes after Evelyn leaves and wonder why it has taken me so long to find her. She has been under my nose the entire time, and I can’t help but feel a pull towards her. I tell myself it’s nonsense to think that way and that I have no interest in being with another woman, but there is something about Evelyn that draws me in. I can’t figure out whether it is her long brunette hair, thick, curvy figure, or her happy personality, but something has pulled me in. My erection presses against my pants, and I scold myself for letting that happen. If I give her the job, I will have to keep myself under control, but I am not sure if I can do that.

I already know that I will give Evelyn the job, but I have to call her references. What kind of a father would I be if I didn’t? I plan to do a background check once I get to work and make sure that she is who she says she is. I don’t see a reason for her to lie, but you can’t be too careful these days. I think of calling her once my phone calls are made and the people that she previously worked for have finished swooning over her. But I put the phone down and decide to tell her personally since she lives down the hall.

“Christian, come on, we are going to see the nice lady who was here earlier,” I announce as I start walking to my son’s bedroom.

“I’m coming, Daddy. Is she going to be my new mommy?” he asks innocently.

His question floors me, and no words come to my mind. I am entirely unsure of how to answer him, but I know I have to give him some kind of reply. A seven-year-old boy who asks questions millions of times a day needs answers.

I utter carefully, “No, Christian. She is going to be your babysitter. That way, we can give Grammy a break.”

“You mean, I won’t see Grammy anymore?” Fear crosses his little face.

“Oh, yes, of course, you will. I thought it might be nice to let Grammy play with her friends while you make a new friend,” I reply.

Christian seems to understand that, so we proceed to Evelyn’s apartment. My nerves suddenly make their presence known right before my fingers rap against the door. Why am I so nervous? I think to myself as I wait for her to open it. And when I see her beautiful face in front of me, I suck in a deep breath. As I look into her beautiful dark brown eyes, I wonder how I’ll ever be able to keep it professional between us when all I want to do is take her in my arms and make her mine.

“Jeremiah! Christian! What a nice surprise! Come in, I am making dinner. Would you two like to join me?” she asks while leading us into her living room.
